Generally speaking wind in the direction of NE - SE makes diving from Teignmouth and into Torbay difficult, once the wind strength is constantly force 3 or greater in the East then the whole bay is rough and shore diving sites also get affected with low viz.
Strong South Westerly or westerly winds are well protected in the bay to the North of the Orestone and inshore up to about 4 miles when conditions become rougher. Torbay itself can be badly affected by strong South Westerly or Westerly winds as this gives the wind quite a reach across the bay.
