Talk on Scapa Flow
A big thank you to Graham Weston for his talk on Scapa Flow often referred to as the ‘wreck meca of Europe’ last Thursday 25th February at the Royal Western Yacht Club. The talk covered the history of Scapa Flow and how it was that the German Navy decided to scuttle the entire German fleet in one go. Which sum 50 years on has provided some of the greatest wreck diving.
The pictures provided were excellent and it wasn’t until the size of the ships were put into context that you release their sheer size. We may think that HMS Scylla is a relatively large wreck but some of the battle cruisers in Scapa are 5 times the size of the Scylla – pretty impressive, with the gun barrels being the size of a small car!!
If anyone is interested in diving Scapa Flow please let the centre know or alternatively join in on the discussion board on facebook.Next month’s talk will be by Cat Ridout from the Wembury Marine Centre on Thursday 25th March starting at 8pm. Hope to see you all there.
